English - Intercultural Competence in Foreign Language Teaching

A short description of the module

This module addresses the following issues: What is the importance of English in a globalized world? How can pupils cooperate internationally? What is culture and intercultural competence? Which cultural elements are central to teaching English as a foreign language? What are texts? How are texts integrated in language teaching? How does the teacher plan language teaching that includes intercultural competence in a globalized world?

The point of departure of this Module is globalization, culture and intercultural competence in the work with particularly texts, images, IT and other media in language teaching.

The following issues will be central:

  • Culture and society connected to global issues in English-speaking countries
  • Cultural meetings in a global perspective involving English-speaking countries
  • Intercultural competence in meetings with other cultures and in comparisons with the home culture
  • Linguistic variations in the English-speaking world
  • Reading, text- and media competence, and communicative competence in language teaching

The student’s own language development will currently be considered in relation to the target areas of the Module.

The knowledge base of the module

National and international research on culture, intercultural competence, linguistic variation, text and the academic subject “English” in the Danish Primary and Lower Secondary School including national and international regulations and guide-lines concerning the subject.

The main focus will be on competence area 3 (intercultural competence in language teaching), but will also lean on knowledge and skills aims from competence areas 1 and 4.

The student can work out well-researched plans, carry out, assess and develop differentiated teaching using various text types and integrating social studies, culture and culture meetings in language teaching.

Plan and carry out supportive processes for the development of their own and pupils’ intercultural competence

Methods that support international cooperation, such as the use of IT

Plan and carry out international cooperation and intercultural projects in English teaching

Communicative competences

Plan and teach communicative competence and language structure

IT and learning processes

Use digital technology and interactive media to support their own and pupils’ receptive and productive learning processes

Creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship in teaching

Plan and carry out projects that support the pupils’ expectations to mastery, their innovation and entrepreneurship

The contribution English makes to general formation and its connection to other subjects

Plan and carry out single subject and cross-curricular teaching with a view to pupils’ general formation

The module may include a link to a practicum school

The Module may include a link to a practicum school in one or more of the following ways:

  • Teaching pupils specific themes in the field of culture and intercultural competence
  • Teaching pupils text competence, including reading strategies, the use of IT and other media
  • Pedagogical uses of teaching materials
  • The use of IT and electronic media in connection to cultural projects
  • Planning and carrying out an international project

Module assessment

The student works out in collaboration with her study group the following two obligatory study products in English:

  1. An intercultural project that can be carried out with a specified grade level. The project must contain
    • Target group
    • Aims
    • Descriptions of the content and the process
    • Suggested materials
    • Suggestions for cooperators and/or ways to cooperate
    • Assessment
    • The teacher’s manual

The project must be presented to the class and made available in digital form. Participation in presentations and feedback is mandatory.

  1. Two synopses including IT-based performative elements within the content area of the Module. Required length: 1-2 standard pages.

To pass the modul

The student individually hands in the above obligatory study products.
