Basis Module, 10 ECTS points. Language of instruction: primarily English

A short description of the module

In this Module the following issues will be addressed: What is language? What is interlanguage? What is the aim of foreign language teaching? How is language described? How and why are language elements taught?

Focusing on communicative competences in the academic subject “English” in the Danish Primary and Lower Secondary School and teacher education, this Module also deals with approaches to language teaching. Analysis of a few language examples will be central, e.g. target language models, early-stage interlanguage, and more advanced interlanguage.

The Module comprises empirical and theoretical work with:

  • Describing and analyzing interlanguage in relation to the target language English as a global Lingua Franca, including linguistic variants
  • Language description and analysis comprising form, meaning and usage on various levels from context to detail
  • Students’ own language and the role of being a language model including the students’ use of appropriate meta-language aimed at various target groups
  • The use of various types of aids for analyzing and describing language

The student’s own language development will currently be considered in relation to the target areas of the Module.

The knowledge base of the module

National and international research on communicative competences, language, language description, interlanguage, language teaching and the subject “English” in the Danish Primary and Lower Secondary School including national and international regulations and guide-lines concerning the subject.

Mainly competence area 1: Language competence and language teaching, but also selected knowledge and skills objectives from competence area 4: Teaching English as a foreign language

The student can make well-researched plans, carry out, assess and develop differentiated teaching aimed at improving pupils’, and their own, language competences.

Use English to teach and communicate – enough to take part in the international debate about learning and teaching

Meta-language to describe the structure and usage of English

Describe language structures to a variety of target groups

Communicative competence

Plan, carry out, assess lessons on communicative competences and language structures

Interlanguage

Point out focus points in the work with the student’s own and pupils’ interlanguage based on analyses, and with consideration to the pupils’ age

Language approach, curriculum, and how to organize English lessons in practice

Point out the underlying principles of lessons - the student’s own and others’

Laws, current national and international regulations and guide lines, comprising course materials and digital resources

Reason for parts of lessons with the aim to optimize learning

How the subject adds to general formation, or bildung

Plan mono-subject lessons aimed at pupils’ general formation

Theory and methods of analysis relevant to describing learning and teaching in English as a foreign language

Develop own lessons to the tune of the ever changing needs of the surrounding world based on relevant research

National and international research in the field of TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language)

Keep up to date on TEFL issues – nationally and internationally

The Module may include a link to a practicum school

The Module may include a link to a practicum school in one or more of the following ways:

  • Collecting and analyzing oral or written interlanguage and giving feedback to the pupil(s) about his language and language usage
  • Teaching pupils specific language areas, such as grammar, phonetics, vocabulary
  • Analyzing teaching materials for EFL classes
  • Training using English as a classroom language

Module assessment 

The student creates in cooperation with her study group 2 obligatory study products in English:

  1. A. One synopsis including an IT-based performative element within the content area of the Module. Required Length: 1-2 standard pages.

B. One interlanguage analysis of written pupil language including feedback to the pupil and suggestions for further work to develop the pupil’s interlanguage. Required length: 3-5 standard pages.

B. One interlanguage analysis based on oral pupil language including feedback to the pupil and suggestions for further work to develop the pupil’s interlanguage. Required length: 3-5 standard pages.

To pass the module

The student individually hands in the above obligatory study products.
