Interdisciplinary specialization module: Integration of physical activity in everyday teaching practice

Studieordning: 2019 (LU KP)

Module type, scope and language of instruction

Interdisciplinary specialization module. 10 ECTS. Language: English

Short description

In this module, we work with the physiological and psychological connections between physical activity and learning, including how physical activity can be integrated as a part of the teaching professional’s competence, taking into account the academic goals for teaching in schools.

We will explore how physical activity is and can become a part of the school day, and we will examine the school reform’s importance and goals for precisely this area.

We will work both theoretically and practically with physical activity as a part of the school day, taking our point of departure in the teaching subjects that the students in the group are studying. Whenever possible, we will work with interdisciplinary learning processes, since physical activity in the school day goes across different subjects and timetables. This module also includes outdoor teaching as a basis for movement.

Scientific foundation

This interdisciplinary module will take its point of departure in scientific, humanistic and social scientific knowledge areas and theories, where the connection between theory and practice will be of central importance.

This module addresses the competence areas in the teaching subjects the students in the group are studying.

Skills aims: The student can

Knowledge aims: the student has knowledge about

Argue for the relevance of physical activity in relation to learning within subjects

Neurophysiological connections between physical activity and learning

Plan, conduct and evaluate teaching in which physical activity supports pupils’ motivation, development and learning

Motivation, development and learning in school

Analyze pupils’ motivation, development and learning processes in physical activities

The collection and analysis of empirical data

Use technology and learning resources to support physical activity and learning in school

How technology and learning resources can support physical activity and learning

Relationship to practice

In this module, we work with theory and practice connected to working with physical activity and learning in school. Whenever possible and relevant – for example, through school visits – we include schools and pupils in this process.

Working methods

Category

Total working hours: 275

Primary working methods

Category 1

Group teaching, teacher presentations, and reflection in theory and practice. The students are responsible for parts of the teaching. Joint knowledge sharing, reflection, and presentation of study products.

Category 2

121

Completing activities, tasks and study products. Students are expected to spend 75 hours each on the compulsory study product (as part of a group).

Category 3

90

Preparation of theoretical as well as practical teaching, both individually and as part of a study group.

Category 4

15

Guidance on study products, subject-related conversations. Group feedback on other groups’ study products.

How to pass

Students work in groups of 3-4 on a multi-modal study product, which, as a minimum, includes video and text. The product includes a written assignment of 10–15 standard pages and a 5–10 minute video.

The product demonstrates the student’s knowledge and skills within the areas of neuropsychological and subject-didactical connections between physical activity and learning as well as the use of technology and learning resources in teaching that includes physical activity.

The problem formulation stipulates which competence aims in the student’s teaching subject the study product should address. The student has to present the study product during the module. Specific requirements for the content and presentation are provided in the module plan.

The multi-modal study product is assessed on a pass or fail basis.

The presentation is included in the assessment. Each student receives an individual assessment.

This module qualifies for the following competence aims

This module qualifies for the competence aims in the teaching subjects the students in the group are studying.

Preconditions for taking this module

It is recommended that the student has completed at least a basic module in the teaching subject that he/she wishes to connect to the specialization module.
