PL4: General Teaching Competence



Brief description of the course

This course offers an introduction to planning, carrying out and assessing lessons, and to reasons behind teaching in the Danish Folkeskole.

Throughout the course we will be working with

  • analysis of ‘didaktik’.
  • developing classroom instruction with a particular focus on the general education of pupils.
  • optimal learning environments through differentiation.
  • varied working methods.
  • the use of analogue and digital learning aids.
  • assessment and feedback.


The knowledge base of the course

Various theories within General Education (allgemeine didaktik) and pedagogy based on national and international research on planning classroom instruction, occupies a central part of this course.


Competency objectives of the module:

The student is able to:

  • plan, carry out, assess and develop classroom instruction in the Danish Public School (Folkeskolen) and justify their instructional choices.

Plan classroom instruction/lessons as well as establish learning goals for the entire class as well as for individual pupils

The legal, social and cultural framework of the school, curriculum and curriculum theory, lesson planning including planning goal-oriented lessons.

Apply a wide array of instructional methods, including utilizing movement and a variety of action-based forms of teaching

Instructional methods as well as analogue and digital teaching aids, and their practical usefulness in relation to pupil abilities, the ethics of teaching, purpose and content

Apply a wide array of relevant teaching aids and other resources

Analogue and digital teaching aids and the concrete applicability of other resources as related to pupil abilities, the ethics of teaching, purpose and content

Systematically assess (pupils') learning outcomes, learning environment and classroom instruction, and apply the results as the foundation for future lesson planning and developing classroom instruction

The possibilities and limits of assessment and feedback when used in connection with teaching and learning.

Differentiate classroom instruction according to the abilities and potential of the pupils

Differentiation, inclusion and learning environments

Manage classroom instruction while taking into consideration the teacher's intentions, as well as make use of one’s own professional judgement in complicated situations

Classroom management, ways of acting, relations, and the ethics of classroom instruction.

Plan, implement and develop educational sessions that develop pupils’ fantasy, innovation and entrepreneurial competencies as well as strengthen their desire to learn and their motivation to act.

Creativity, innovative and entrepreneurship in relation to the pupils’ versatile development, the teachers’ professional development and development of pedagogical approach.

Develop collaboration with colleagues and other resources within the school, parents and pupils on classroom instruction and developing instruction.

The professional basis for communication, collegial collaboration, teacher-parent collaboration, inter-professionalism, and school development

Critically assess and apply research methods and research findings relating to teaching and learning

Relevant research methods, national and international research and development findings.
